This is one of those stories that is so scary because it reminds us how precious life and our health can be.

A woman in Texas named Krystina Pacheco almost lost her life after she gave birth to her daughter Amelia in October 2022. Pacheco delivered her daughter via C-section and the infection she got from the procedure became so bad that she developed septic shock and had to have her hands and feet amputated.

Two days after Amelia was born, Pacehco, who also has a 2-year-old son, developed a fever and she experienced shortness of breath and vomiting. She was given ibuprofen by a nurse but her condition didn’t improve.

She went to an emergency room and eventually had to be airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio where the doctors there told her she had septic shock due to an infection.

Pacheco said, “I just remember I couldn’t breathe anymore and I couldn’t see anymore and I just started slowly fading out. My husband, I could just hear him saying, ‘Please come back to us, please, your babies need you. I need you. I need you to be here and help me with our babies,’ and that’s the last thing I remember.”

The treatments and medication the new mother received cut off circulation to her extremities and doctors were forced to amputate her hands and feet.

Pacheco said, “I was just breaking down and being absolutely crushed. And crying with my family, crying with Jacob, and just being sad that my life would no longer be the same.”

Pacheco was eventually moved to a rehab center in Houston where she is learning to deal with her new situation. She said, “It’s a roller coaster, I’m not going to say I don’t have my bad days, because I do. It’s an emotional thing to experience.”
