People love adorable animals, especially in adorable outfits. It’s the entire basis of the Internet. On the Internet, you can’t swing a cat on the without hitting at least 15 articles about cats in funny clothes. Some of those articles appear on this very website!

The pet craze might seem like a recent phenomenon, but as today’s collection of vintage holiday cards shows, it goes back decades . Originally compiled by our friend Robert E. Jackson and shared by the estimable folks over at Flashbak, this gallery proves that people have always gone a little overboard with their pets. In fact, goofy photos of people with their dogs, cats, are as old as photography itself, and probably much older.
