Renters Are Shaming Landlords Who Have Ripped Them off

If you think the rent is too high in New York City or San Francisco, you should try shopping for an apartment in London. A modest flat goes for well over $2200/mo (USD) and rents rose 10.7 percent in 2015 alone. Now add terrible conditions on top of crazy high rent, and you’ve got the perfect conditions for a social media campaign.

In order to exact at least a small form of revenge, London renters took to Twitter with #VentYourRent, a hashtag campaign started by Generation Rent. Company spokesperson Dan Wilson told Dazed:

The hashtag #ventyourrent is unearthing the scale of common problems like damp and mice, all the way up to the most shocking experiences like poisoning, ceilings falling in and bullying landlords and letting agents.

And so, I give you landlord shaming at its best. Perhaps this will be the next big thing in coffee table books…you know, if your landlord hasn’t busted your coffee table.

And you know Americans can’t resist a chance to take the fight to Twitter – they’re getting in on it, too!

Other people just want to bitch about their roommates on the hashtag. Also a fair use of social media, I say.

Update: This hashtag is still going strong, with people from more and more countries getting in on the fun, so we went out and pulled a few new gems!

I approve of name-calling in some situations. Like this one. When it’s true.
