Reimagining Classic Artwork As Gluten Free

Unless you’re a member of an uncontacted Amazonian tribe of hunter-gatherers, you’re aware of gluten, the protein found in most grains, and how a lot of people are trying to remove it from their diets. The push to live gluten-free has mostly concerned the food we buy, but now one French artist has brought “gluten-free” to the art world.

Graphic artist Arthur Coulet is the mastermind behind the Gluten Free Museum on Tumblr, in which he takes classic works of art and photoshops out anything that contains gluten. The result is a series of bizarre and often funny scenes that are way different than the original artist intended.

Coulet isn’t trying to weigh in on either side of the gluten debate. His main goal, as he told the BBC, is to encourage art appreciation. “Everyone has seen Vermeer’s Milkmaid, but who really looks at the bread on the table?” he said. “This is a new way to look at well-known artworks and discover others.” And the collection really does make you realize how often wheat shows up in artwork.
