On February 13, 2023, a 34-year-old woman from Illinois and her 5-year-old son plunged 90 feet into the Niagara Gorge at Niagara Falls State Park. The woman passed away and her son was critically injured.

What looked at first to be a tragic accident is now being called an intentional act by authorities investigating the case.

A New York State Police captain said that the woman had been at the state park earlier in the day with her husband and her young son before she and the boy jumped into the gorge and they are trying to piece together what led up to the fatal incident.

The names of the woman and her son have not been released because the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Investigators have interviewed eyewitnesses and the woman’s husband to try to figure out exactly what happened on that fateful day.

Rescuers had to navigate more than 300 feet of dangerous, icy ground in order to get to the victims.
