Artist Adds Pop Culture Characters To Thrift Store Paintings

The world is full of paintings that almost nobody looks at. Generic still lives and landscapes litter our country’s motels, waiting rooms, and most of all, our thrift stores. When it comes to artwork, you can’t get much more forgettable than a secondhand painting.

And it’s that disposability that attracted artist Dave Pollot to thrift store artwork in the first place. For years, he’s been buying up unwanted paintings, repairing their bumps and bruises, and then adding a character from pop culture. Not only are the images funny, they’re also a way to revive art that’s gotten past its prime.

“These pieces have already lived out their first chapter as art that people once connected with and chose to hang in their homes,” Pollot writes on his website. “They are the pop culture of a day gone by, but that haven’t survived the test of time. My work seeks to make them relevant, relatable, and wanted in today’s world.”
