Most zookeepers go into the business because they love animals–or at least one would hope so! But zookeepers at a zoo in Oregon decided to express their animal love in a unique way, by Tweeting an Amazon-style “review” of their favorite critter, an otter.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Overall very good first impressions. Sturdy built, totally winter-ready and waterproof. Only comes in brown but that’s actually a plus for me. #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/IK99ODsTPT— Oregon Zoo (@OregonZoo) March 9, 2018
The Oregon Zoo wasn’t done. Next, an owl got the Amazon review treatment:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED
This stylish little unit is amazing. Sound quality A+. No distortion at full volume but bass is a little weak. Top rotates which is a plus. #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/OYaWOfzosA— Oregon Zoo (@OregonZoo) March 9, 2018
And just like that, a hashtag was born. Zoos, aquariums, and parks around the country began reviewing their animals under the hashtag #rateaspecies.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WASN’T READY
Best thing for the times. So soothing, lowers your heart rate instantly. Could watch for hours and hours, better than most programming out there. Especially popular since 2016.#ratesapecies pic.twitter.com/kFZH3DCyYQ— Monterey Bay Aquarium (@MontereyAq) March 9, 2018
This is all being done in good fun, but some places used the trending topic to slip in some facts about their animals, like the pika, a mammal found mostly in Asia.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
PROS: High-quality squeak system, thrives in rocky situations, hay for days.
CONS: Maybe TOO cute. Potential pun hazard. #pikaboo #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/jTFFGImVhO— Yosemite Conservancy (@YoseConservancy) March 9, 2018
Here’s what the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical had to say about one of the colobus monkeys, a thumbless primate found in Kenya.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ NO THUMBS UP
Aspiring home brewers will find lots to be impressed by in this efficient model. Hard to reach unless you’re an adept climber. Highest-possible rating; no thumbs up!#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/EXHxFoLS4B— Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens (@LAZoo) March 9, 2018
Of course, not all Amazon reviews are positive, and neither are animal ratings. The Monterey Bay Aquarium also reviewed otters, but knocked off a star:
⭐️⭐️⭐️ otter be 4 stars but
ok first of all i’m very satisfied much improved over river edition. extremely warm insulation which adds buoyancy. if u like kelp the UrchinCrusher+ is a must on coastal trips. minus one star because it’s actually a weasel lol?! #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/oCGV3aGlZ0— Monterey Bay Aquarium (@MontereyAq) March 9, 2018
Some folks went playfully negative as a way of highlighting what’s unique about an individual animal in their collection, like this albino alligator:
⭐⭐⭐ NOT AS EXPECTED
Color not as shown (not even CLOSE!!!), supposed to be predator but just sits on heated rock all day and let turtles walk all over him (if ambush predators are so different you should tell people) also missing one toe???#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/5EAdkDN5D4— CA AcademyOfSciences (@calacademy) March 9, 2018
Or this echnida:
⭐️⭐️ 2/5 stars only. The description stated it was a mammal. Upon arrival this echidna laid an egg. A baby hatched out, that I later found out is called a puggle. I swear if I wanted more Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts I would by another book!#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/DHrU3gZvzx

To be sure, there were a handful of legitimate gripes as well. (Try spending every day with animals and see if one doesn’t get on your nerves.)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 Audio Recorder: Mixed feelings on this review. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It only records what it finds interesting. AND will replay LOUDLY usually at or BEFORE sunrise. Also, no battery needed. Requires fresh fruits & veggies. VERY MESSY.

But all in all, #rateaspecies is a fun, positive trend that educated us about some pretty interesting animals. And in that spirit, here are a few more animal ratings:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Pleasantly surprised. Thought I had ordered a Roomba, but this did an excellent job of cleaning up my ecosystem. Only downside is the projectile vomiting. Overall 5 stars, would drunkenly purchase again. #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/5fDfHiaWNq

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ A+ VINTAGE ROADSTER
Despite few major design updates since the Ice Age, a worthy investment for current and future aficionados. Oxygen-processing and sustained land speed unparalleled. Extremely rare, though hopefully not for long.#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/Dqa0Gp7Q7m— Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens (@LAZoo) March 9, 2018
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A TOUR DE FORCE
Simply superlative. Disruptive design. Inspired mechanical engineering. Invented its own niche with seamless software/hardware integration. Absolute head-turner and conversation starter. Sorry, no headphone jack: the future is here. #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/f6g2QINpgw— Monterey Bay Aquarium (@MontereyAq) March 9, 2018
⭐️⭐️⭐️ CAT/SNAKE HYBRID
Extremely musky. 5/6 ends sharp and pointy. Handles like a furry noodle. But fantastic for taking care of unwanted prairie dogs along your property.#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/I7euo0S3GJ— Tyger (@TygerWDR) March 9, 2018
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ GREAT VALUE
LOVE these. Must-have on all outdoor adventures. Keeps bugs off even when wet. Cordless.#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/aGJ7GsMlhj— Oregon Zoo (@OregonZoo) March 9, 2018
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ PRAYING THEY KEEP MAKING THESE
As seen on @Oatmeal. Full set is the ultimate seafood multi-tool: tenderizes, slices and serves in milliseconds! Comes in all colors plus some you can’t see.#rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/vm2YhrBihR— Monterey Bay Aquarium (@MontereyAq) March 9, 2018
