Let’s say it’s your wedding day, and you just got into your dream wedding dress, one you’ve imagined since you were a child. It’s perfect in every way: it’s big, puffy, and all-white, (not to mention expensive as hell), and you’re going to make sure it stays that way. There’s just one small problem: what happens when you need to go to the bathroom? Oh, you’re going to need to use the bathroom at some point over the next 10-12 hours. A few champagnes to calm the nerves will guarantee that.
A bride who’s feeling the call of nature doesn’t have any good options. She can hold it all day. (Not possible.) She can enlist a trusted friend or family member to accompany her into the bathroom. (Not ideal.) She can take off the dress every time she goes to the bathroom. (Not a chance.) Or she can attempt to fly solo and go to the bathroom by herself, in her dress. (Nightmare.)
But finally, there’s a solution! A UK woman named Tina posted her wedding hack on ikeahackers.net, a website where people share tips and tricks to enhance popular Ikea products.
Leading up to her wedding day, Tina worried about the Bathroom Question. “Someone helping or watching me going to the bathroom on my wedding day? Not being able to have free hands to use the toilet paper? Or even worse if my period decides to show? NO WAY!” she wrote.

But it’ll set you back about $35. A wedding is already one of the most expensive events in a person’s life, and every dollar counts. Instead, Tina came up with a DIY version of the Bathroom Buddy that’ll cost you a dollar, tops. All you need is a pair of scissors and one of Ikea’s iconic blue Frakta bags.

To make your “bridal bathroom helper,” as Tina calls it, fold your Frakta bag in half and cut off the bottom of it. The size of the hole is important–it needs to be large enough to accommodate your feet, but still small enough to hold in your wedding dress. Tina recommends starting with a smaller hole you can later widen.

Better yet, take your bridal bathroom helper with you to the wedding dress store to test it out before you buy. (However, actually going to the bathroom in a wedding dress you don’t own is frowned upon.)
To use the bag, simply pull it up and over your wedding dress, put the bag’s straps over your shoulders, and you’re ready to ascend the porcelain throne.

Tina shared a few more tips to make going to the bathroom on your big day even easier:
- You do not need to remove your shoes.
- You could conceivably get the Ikea bag on over your dress by yourself, or you could ask for someone’s help–either way, you can do it outside the bathroom, without needing anyone to accompany you in.
- Once your dress is secured inside your bag, your hands will be free for any and all bathroom purposes. You can remove your underwear. You can apply period protection. You can use toilet paper. You could probably even play Candy Crush on your phone.
Finally, you can pee and poop on your wedding day, with no fuss and no muss. And isn’t that the best wedding gift of all?
