Before we begin, let’s make something clear. We’re not saying all parents should shell out $150 for a top-of-the-line Pikachu costume every year. Nobody should pay that much for a Pikachu costume! Store-bought costumes are overpriced, and we all know the whole enterprise is a scam.

Making your kid’s Halloween costume yourself is great! More parents should do it! That being said, some people’s DIY skills fall a bit short of Martha Stewart’s. For some parents, the best they can do is spay paint some cardboard yellow, duct tape it together, and Sharpie “PIKACHU” on the front just so it’s clear.

Halloween costumes are definitely funny, but there’s also something sweet about them, too. You can tell the parent meant well and did their best despite limited skills.

Below are 15 homemade Halloween costumes that left a lot to be desired. I would also like to acknowledge that if I ever had to make a whole Halloween costume for a kid, it would be much, much worse than all of these.
