Nothing takes the wind out of a huge movie’s sails quite like a short, dismissive summary from someone who isn’t a fan. “Infinity War? That’s the one where people in tights fight over knockoff gemstones like you’d buy on QVC? I’ll pass.”
Badly summarizing a movie plot is a time-honored Internet tradition. It’s not really about crapping on movies as much as it is an exercise in compressing two hours of story, and thousands and thousands of filmmakers’ effort, into one glib sentence. The result always makes the movie sound awful, no matter how good it actually is.
