Sandro Miller is one of the world’s most successful commercial photographer, with clients ranging from GQ and Esquire to American Express. But in his spare time, the self-taught Cuban pursues his passion projects, often photographing his friend, actor John Malkovich.

The two met back in the 1990’s, when Sandro was working for the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, and they’ve since collaborated on several projects. So when Miller decided in 2013 to make a book paying tribute to the photographers who inspired him, he knew Malkovich would be his muse.

“John is the most brilliant, prolific person I know. His genius is unparalleled,” Sandro said, of their collaboration. “I can suggest a mood or an idea and within moments, he literally morphs into the character right in front of my eyes. He is so trusting of my work and our process… I’m truly blessed to have him as my friend and collaborator.”

The book, Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters, recreates iconic photographs by replacing their subjects with the star of Con Air and Being John Malkovich. It’s definitely a strange and hilarious treat, but when you look at the photos it’s clear how skilled both men are at their respective crafts. John Malkovich makes anything better, and famous photographs are no exception!
