We all heard the expression “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but when it comes to romance novels, that’s kind of the point. All those heaving pecs and ripped bodices are meant to grab your attention, not sell you on the book’s literary merits.
Yep, romance novel covers are larger than life on purpose. So what happens when you swap out the muscly gentlemen and busty ladies for folks with average-sized bodies? Cosmopolitan photo editor Kathleen Kamphausen did exactly that, and you can check out the results below.
1. Savage Thunder
The only thing that could keep them apart was saddle sores.
2. Enchant The Heavens
The only thing that could keep them apart was her narcolepsy.
3. Gentle Rogue
Why’s he so gentle? After months at sea his body has been ravaged by scurvy.
He’s not nearly as gentle as the previous rogue, and 1.5 times as much of a scoundrel.
5. Scoundrel’s Captive
She was a beautiful but naive ingenue. He was a rugged adventurer with a tiny horse growing out of his shoulder. Could their love survive?
6. The Shadow And The Star
He pulled her close and then whispered, “This entire waterfall is made with my sweat.”
7. Hombre de Suenos
Translation: “I honestly have no idea how sex works.”
8. Tender Is The Storm
Guys, this is why people fence their yards. Or at least plant a few more shrubs.
9. Warrior’s Woman
Oh cool, they’re having sex on the set of a Prince video.
